It has been said that the only way to prevent a hangover is to hydrate yourself, since alcohol is a diuretic so hagover is a dehydration. But a recent scientific studies had shown that dehaydration may be neither the only cause for terrible hangovers, nor the most common one.
According
to a study published in 2000, in a study conducted by JGWiese, MG
Shlipak and WS Browner(Ann Intern Med) most common causes for
hangover, besides dehydration are hormonal alterations, dysregulated
cytokine pathways, and toxic effects of alcohol. Genetic also seems
to have an important role in this condition, as found by R
Swift, D Davidson in Alcohol Health Res World, 1998.
People with history of alcoholic relatives are commonly also affected
by this condition.
Lately,
the most common and spread belief about hangover is that you should
drink a grass of water in between glasses of alcoholic drinks, but if
you want to be sure you should also check your family history and a
visit to the doctor just to check once in while can be very helpful
too, let's not forget that hangover can also cause heart and hormone
problems.
The best cure for the hangover is.... not to drink. But, if you did, I've heard that eating eggs and juice help too. I have also read that it is not good to overeat or to drink coffee. As you said, dehydration is not the only reason of having a hangover, it also has to do with your gender. It is said that women suffer from the worst hangovers.

ReplyDeleteAn old fella once said "To avoid hangovers....do not stop drinking" I guess that the lower quality of the drink the harder the hangover will be. I read once that eating a fue nuts before going on drinking prevents it.
I think that, as you said, "the lower the quality of the drink, the worse the hangover is" is true. A friend told me that drinking a Gatorade before going to bed is incredibly useful too.
