We can end AIDS!

Vaccinologists from IAVIS (International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) are working on a vaccine that prevents HIV infection; if they succeed, they will find the cure for twenty-first century black plague: HIV.

HIV structure
For the ones who don’t know, IAVIS is a no-for-profit organization founded in 1996 and at the moment is operating over 20 countries. Its main goal is the creation of a vaccine that can make our immune system block this virus and to train it in order it recognizes and destroys the cells that have already been infected with HIV.

Currently scientists haven’t been able to come up with a cure, but they have made some progress: They found antibodies that neutralize a range of HIV variants around the world. These antibodies blocked the infected cells and were gripped by them making them neutral, meaning, not harmful.

Trials have been carried out on cells being a success, and right now a trial is being conducted on humans, so we will only have to wait a few years to see how they did.

The creation of this vaccine will definitely help millions of lives around the world, but if we can find the cure for AIDS, what will be next? Cure for cancer may be? But, will this be good for humanity? If we can find solutions to every disease that the human body can deal with, what will happen? Would the world collapse because of overpopulation?
