Tissue engineering.

We saw a months ago the news about this girl (with a very fancy lastname, that's why she made it to the news) who needed a double organ transplant. She got the organs, but her condition was not good enough to superate the post operation. As we all know, she died.

If one of our vital organs stop working we are pretty much out of hope, because is very hard to get a compatible and functional new organ for us. But not all is lost, because in Wake Forest University in North Carolina are working on bioartificial organs. How is this posible? Researchers are making use of stem cells, basic cells that can be transsformed into types that are specific to tissues like a liver or lung. How cool is this? Quite a lot! The human body is amazing, so we need to use its uniqueness to improve our health and end up the suffering of many people in the world waiting for an organ.

So far only "basic" organs have been created and implanted, yet this lits up the hope again. Maybe in a few years we might buy an organ, a tailor-made one.

It makes me think that  if our organs fail, we will replace them, but how many can we take in? If they are created from our owns cell the impact shouldn't be that hard. Also makes me question how will we die? In an accident?

Do you think that it is playing to be God?
