Organic Foods vs. Genetically Modified Foods: Which option is the best one?

For most of people, the answer to this question may be the first option with eyes closed; nevertheless, a recent research on this controversy could change several minds.

After analyzing approximately 200 studies on the differences of organic and conventional food regarding nutritional content, a group of scientists from the Stanford University have concluded that there is not enough evidence to prove that organic foods are healthier than conventional foods. In fact, both types of foods proved to have almost the same amount of nutrients such as vitamins, proteins, etc.

Even though the studies were conducted on humans, they didn’t last more than two years. That means that there is no evidence to analyze the long-term impact. Since it is claimed that genetically modified foods (GM foods) could have long-term consequences, it is not possible to say whether they are completely healthy, or completely dangerous.

Concerning organic foods, they may be additive and pesticide free; however, their price is more elevated and the production is slower than GM foods, considering that the demand is greater than the supply.

Even if GM foods are widely criticized because of the impacts of their production, or the possible consequences for the consumers, they’re being widely spread throughout the world.

In the world we’re living nowadays, the phrase “the faster the better” has become part of our lives. Should we deal with it by accepting GM foods? Or should we try to respect the normal pace of nature by preferring organic foods?

  1. Without a doubt I'd rather consume organic food. We should go back to what the agriculture industry has been since the beginning of times: synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers free products. Even though there's not enough evidence to prove that organic foods are healthier than conventional foods, natural products are always better.
Let's give organic products a try. They may be more expensive now, but if people start demanding them, in a few years the prices are going to be lowered.

  2. I would also prefer to consume organic foods rather than GM foods because I think that natural foods are safer. Kathy mentioned that it has never truly been proved that genetically modified foods are dangerous; however, it hasn't been proved that they are safe, so you cannot trust in consuming a type of food whose secondary effects are not clear. Maybe GM foods are not so bad, but the good things, such as proteins or vitamins, should be in organic foods that for me are the "real foods". And about the price, sometimes the cheaper becomes the more expensive: I'd prefer to save money on doctors rather than on food.

  3. Even though organic food has been always considered the best option, GM food could work. I personally wouldn't matter to eat this kind of food, and if it was already tested in humans I don't see the harm. May be scientist could spread the benefits of the GM to encourage people to try it because so far I hadn't heard about this discovery.

  4. It’s very important to take into account that those scientist, in somehow, didn’t finish the study. I think in order to get real results or enough evidence about the impact that MG foods could have on human beings, they should have at least conduct the proper trial and also examine the people who are the subject of the study more regularly. Even though most of us eat MG foods we do not actually know which could be the side effects of eating it. For me, organic food is the best and the tastiest food we could ever try.

  5. First of all I'd like to point out that I agree with Vera, the study was somehow unfinished. Second. the perks of organic food are not only in its non-modified genetics, but also in its benefits for the enviroment. To be more responsible I would pick organic food and agreeing with Ignacia, although there is not enough evidence to say the difference between GM food and Organic food, it's higly probably that with further investigation scientists will be able to say that there is.
